Preparing Your OEM Packaging Brief

Good packaging discussions begin with the product inside. Before working on graphics, gather the information that defines what the pack needs to hold and how you want it to be presented. A clear brief gives the product and design teams a common starting point.

Describe the product and pack contents

List the products included in each pack, the intended quantity and any accessories that belong with them. Identify whether you are developing a single product, a coordinated set or several related packs. Share confirmed product dimensions where available, and flag details that still need to be agreed.

Explain how the pack will be used or displayed. For example, you might want a straightforward retail presentation or packaging for a branded gift set. Reference photographs can make the intended arrangement easier to discuss.

Prepare your brand materials

Collect your logo, brand colors, preferred typefaces and approved product wording. Supply editable artwork when available, together with a reference showing how you expect it to look. Identify any parts of the design that must stay consistent across the range.

Keep each file clearly named and include a version date. If several people are reviewing the artwork, choose one person to consolidate feedback so the next revision follows a single set of instructions.

List the information the pack needs

Provide the exact text and graphics you want included, such as product names, pack contents, barcode artwork and contact details. Also share the destination market and any labeling requirements you have confirmed for that market. These details should be reviewed before the artwork is approved.

Review the whole pack

Check the layout, wording, logo placement and product arrangement together. Ask for clarification on anything that is unclear, and keep a record of the version you approve. If the product or pack contents change later, review the affected artwork again.

A useful inquiry includes:

  • Product details and proposed pack contents.
  • Packaging references and desired presentation.
  • Brand files and approved wording.
  • Estimated quantity and destination.
  • Open questions that need to be resolved.
